one day

one day you woke up angry,
filled with a fire that consumes,
white-hot inside your skin,
at the universe and the world,
at your so-called family and friends,
and mostly yourself.

one day you woke up sad,
uncontrolled storms and waves
tossing you inside out so much that
you
almost
drowned.

one day you woke up disgusted
at the reflection in the mirror,
retching against the white porcelain
with a cold back burning.
there is no way out
but to face society’s music.

one day you woke up afraid
of the whispering ghosts
that doesn’t know day and night,
that doesn’t care if it’s past or future.
no time like the present, they say,
as their torrents of torment tilts you.

one day you woke up surprised
by the silence that greets you.
your ears ringing, almost painfully,
almost too much for too little.
you didn’t rip your ears out
because the birds stopped you.

one day you will wake up happy,
on the right side of the bed
on top of the world,
not because the sun smiles at you
or a cup of coffee is waiting for you
but because you love yourself.
