stillness

Psalm 46:10 NIV
“He says, ‘Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.’”

tap, tap, tap
goes my foot.
be still, i reprimand it
and rest my hand on my knee.

it rumbles a grunt
and stops for a minute.
i sigh in relief
thinking that it’s over.

thump, thump, thump
and there goes my heart,
trying to jump out of its cage.
stay there, i beg, it’s to protect you.

but we both know that is a lie.
the prison is my fear solidified,
my hurts sobbing
after i’ve locked them up.

tap, tap, tap
goes a warm hand on my shoulder.
there is an odd dip in its center.
know that i am here, He said.

i face Him
and pause in awe.
the angst i’ve been holding
rushes out of my chest.

thump,
thump,
thump,
and He stills my heart.
